May 21-23

Visitors to the Mexican Caribbean in May have the opportunity to witness the reenactment of an ancient Mayan pilgrimage to the sacred island of Cozumel to worship at the shrine of Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility and childbirth. After months of arduous training, teams of trained oarsmen from Cancún, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and further afield set sail from Xcaret at dawn on May 22 in authentic wooden canoes on the Sacred Mayan Journey (Sagrada Travesía Maya). On May 23 the pilgrims make the return voyage to Xcaret.
