In late November in Cuernavaca, Puerto Morelos municipal government received the Local Government Responsibility for Biodiversity award from the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives in recognition of its sea turtle conservation program and environmental education workshops in schools.

In the summer of 2017, City Hall staff, resort security guards and volunteers protected 2,124 green and loggerhead turtle nests along the Puerto Morelos shoreline.

From improving waste disposal and water management to new parks, reforestation, mangrove forest and wildlife protection, Puerto Morelos government is working to make the municipal district sustainable. Urban infrastructure will be improved, development will be regulated to protect the environment and a Climate Change Action Plan is also being created.
