A project to boost the protection of the wetlands and mangrove forests surrounding the village of Puerto Morelos may soon be implemented by the Municipal Government and Mexican Ministry of the Environment.

The project entails restoring the natural flow of water through the parched wetlands that has been interrupted by the roads into the village and to the coast at Petempich. The plan is to build drainage canals under the roads to distribute water through the wetlands and reconnect fragmented areas and for the movement of wildlife. Reforestation will also take place in areas where the mangrove ecosystem has deteriorated.
