In April, the Puerto Morelos authorities stepped in to clear mounds of seaweed that has been washing ashore in recent weeks. A mechanical digger and the operators are on loan from Cancun to remove it from the beaches.
Some of the seaweed is buried in the sand and in the long term helps form dunes and protect the coast from erosion. The Blue Green nursery in Puerto Morelos is also receiving sacks of it to be turned into compost and used in eco projects in the community.
